How do vaccines work?

Antibodies-2.jpg

Vaccines help train our immune system to fight a disease. They have a tiny piece of the virus or bacteria - so small it will not make you ill. But your body will notice. When you get a vaccine your immune system starts up:

  • It spots the virus or bacteria that should not be in your body

  • It starts making antibodies to fight the disease.

  • It remembers the disease, and how to fight it next time.
